The son of a poor rice farmer leaves home to make his fortune. When he returns, he is much richer, but he has become too proud to talk to his own mother.

The owner of a little dog, Shiro, finds that the dog brings him great luck, but Shiro does nothing for a greedy neighbour, except get him into trouble.

A young man finds a very large snail on the path near his home. He looks after it, and from that time on, all his housework is done for him. But he has to see what is happening for himself, and this nearly brings his good fortune to an end.

Most of the stories in this collection are about people, magic and gold. They also tell us what happens when people are too proud, too cruel, or too greedy.
