Othello is a great general, but he is also a foreigner in Venice, and Desdemona's father is furious when she marries him. Iago secretly hates Othello for his success, and wants to cause trouble. Pretending to be Othello's greatest friend, Iago persuades the General that his wife has a lover. What will happen to poor, gentle Desdemona when her husband becomes madly jealous?

Also in this collection are stories of betrayal and murder in Ancient Rome, the great love story of Antony and Cleopatra, and many more.

William Shakespeare lived in England, four hundred years ago. He is seen as one of the world's greatest writers, and his plays are still enjoyed by millions of people. This is partly because of the wonderful stories they tell.

Two other collections of stories from Shakespeare's plays are available as Oxford Progressive English Readers: A Midsummer Night's Dream and Other Stories in Grade 2, and The Merchant of Venice and Other Stories in Grade 3.
