A man lies in darkness, locked in a cell and sentenced to die. He reaches out to find ... nothing but emptiness, and the fear of what will happen to him. Will he die by the pendulum's terrible blade, or by falling into the deep, dark pit?

Another man goes to visit a childhood friend at the gloomy old House of Usher. His friend, Roderick, is very ill and slowly going mad. But is it his own mind, his mysterious, dying sister, or the ancient house itself that is causing his terror?

In these and six other classic tales, terrible things happen to people as they face their own fears and the evil deeds of others.

Edgar Allan Poe was born in the United States in 1809, but spent much of his childhood in England. He is famous for his tales of mystery and horror.
