Jim works as a water-clerk in the East. Everyone likes him, but he never stays long in the same job. He always leaves suddenly, and never tells anyone why he is going. He is a man with a secret.

Jim always wanted to be brave, but in the past he did something wrong, and was called a coward. Wherever he travels, it seems he cannot hide from his secret.

At last, Jim comes to the far-away country of Patusan. Here he is brave and strong, and he becomes 'Lord Jim', one of the leaders of that country. He finally finds love and happiness. But then someone comes who seems to guess his secret ...

Joseph Conrad was a Polish sailor who travelled all over the world about a hundred years ago. Later he became a writer, and many of his stories are about life at sea, and the different countries he visited.
