The great detective, Sherlock Holmes, has another case to solve. The body of Sir Charles Baskerville has been found lying in the garden of his house, on Dartmoor. There are no marks on the body, and it seems that the old man simply died of fright. Was he trying to escape from some dreadful thing - perhaps the ghostly animal called the Hound of the Baskervilles?

Sir Charles's friend, Dr Mortimer, does not know what to think. He has seen the footprints of a very large dog quite close to Sir Charles's body, and he has heard that people on Dartmoor speak of a strange animal that runs on the moor. But he does not believe in ghosts, and neither does Sherlock Holmes.

Holmes and his assistant, Dr Watson, have many adventures before they can uncover the truth behind Sir Charles's death.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was a doctor who enjoyed writing stories in his spare time. His tales of the detective, Sherlock Holmes, and his assistant, Dr Watson, are well known in countries all over the world.
